New
State Law for Vaccine Requirement
Parents
should have received an autodialer call from Mr. Hansen if the
school still does not have your students proof of Tdap vaccine
booster.
We would like to remind parents and students about the new California state law requiring a Tdap (Pertussis or whooping cough) vaccine booster for all
students entering 7th through 12th grades which goes into effect
July 1, 2011. Each student must have proof from their health care
provider brought to the Health Office that they have received a
Tdap booster on or after their 10th birthday. Please bring
proof to our health clerk Marilyn Juillerat, at AVHS in the
Health Office. All students must have provided documentation
of this vaccination or they will not receive their schedule
to start school in the Fall. To avoid the line at
registration to have the vaccination proof checked, bring it to the
Health Office NOW!

Thank
You from PTSA Wellness Committee
Student
Survey
Earlier this year, AVHS conducted the Stanford Survey of Adolescent
Experiences. Nearly 2,000 students at every grade level
participated! This huge undertaking was coordinated by
parent volunteer Tina Nomura and vice principal Rhea
Brandon*. And because of their dedication and energy,
AVHS has been accepted to participate in Stanford's Challenge Success
program!
Presentations of quantitative data have been given to groups such
as the PTSA and the AVHS Student
Ambassadors. After qualitiative data is
received, additional presentations will be given, so watch for an
announcement in future AVHS newsletters.
Many parents helped with the survey implementation which
was conducted over a two week period. We are extremely
grateful for their time and assistance. Parent
volunteers were:
Tina Nomura* (Volunteer Coordinator), Beth Veit, Pat Eppard,Leslie
Petty, Victoria Rosenberg, Al Cohen, Angela Bindert*, Karen Liamos,
Eve West, Cheryl Cohen, Jan Mitchell, Wendy Price, Shawn
Copenhagen, Melissa Williams, Theresa Vigil, Cathy Rigl, Beth
Dowling*, Mary Holmberg*, Jacki Stewart*, Judy Woo, Kathleen Turner Meyer, Heather
Brillhart, Patty Snyder, Patty Ingram, Susan
Hurley.
In addition. we are deeply appreciative for
the assistance provided by the PUSD School Nurses; Kathleen Azevedo, Susan
Han, Mary Anne Lindahl and Carrie
Stavropoulos. Their efforts were critical to our
success.
A big "THANK YOU!" goes to our wonderful AVHS staff
who organized and coordinated the survey implementation and greeted
our volunteers, especially Dawnene Stephenson. And
to AVHS counselor Nicole West and those who served on the CS
Task Force*, thank you for participating in the many meetings
leading up to and after the survey implementation.
Several are moving on and won't see the "fruits of their
labor"; we are so very grateful you were involved in this
effort!
Health Fair Volunteers
Coordinated by Health Teacher Diane Farthing and the Bioscience Academy students, the AVHS Health Fair was held just before Spring Break. This lively
event provided hundreds of students opportunities to
learn about a variety of health topics. Parent
volunteers who assisted were: Heather Brillhart (Volunteer
Coordinator), Joyce Senechal, Tina Nomura , LeeAnn Caldwell ,
Joanne Dumanski , Eva Kitayama, Maria Williams , Hailing Jin,
Rachel Banke .
All members of the AVHS school community are welcome to participate
in the AVHS Wellness Committee. Please contact Vivian

Cop
Corner-By Officer
Ken McNeill
If you are the
parent of a teenager the odds are stacked against you when it comes
to teens and alcohol. Nearly 60 percent of teens say they have had
an alcoholic drink in the past year. However, only 30 percent of
parents believe that their child drinks, according to
Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
When it comes to
teens drinking alcohol, don't be deceived. Teenagers everywhere are
constantly exposed to environments where alcohol is made easily
available to them. And if your son or daughter makes the wrong
choice, the consequences could be both damaging and permanent. When
teenagers and alcohol mix, the outcome is never positive.
Remember, it is
against the law for anyone under 21 years old to consume or possess
alcohol, even on private property. But despite the law and the constant,
ubiquitous warnings, the reality is that many teenagers still have
no problems finding alcohol.
Adults continue to
allow minors to drink by selling them alcohol through poor business
practices, or just providing or purchasing the alcohol for them, or
simply looking the other way when their child or their friends
openly talk about their drinking exploits.
Did you know that
if you or your child is caught hosting a party with underage
drinking, you as a parent could face heavy fines and even be arrested.
If officers suspect a group of teenagers are drinking alcohol in
your house, we have the legal right to enter and investigate. And
if your child is caught drinking or under the influence of alcohol
at school or at a school function, they could face severe
consequences, including being banned from future school events or
suspension.
Please teach your
child now to understand the damage that underage drinking can do
and don't enable them by turning a blind eye to something you think
is OK because "all teenagers drink." All teenagers
don't drink. And neither should yours.

Thank You PTSA
Dear PTSA,
Health Quest 2011!! A warm day, 32 booths, Over 1300
students. What an event! Our community -sponsored booths
covered topics such as mental illness, addiction, organ donation,
and teen health issues. Examples of our student-sponsored
booths included human trafficking and diabetes. We also had
educational opportunities represented through Los Positas College and Kaiser. The entire gym was filled with opportunities to learn more
about health and health careers. As students entered they were
given a bag with a scavenger hunt and a pen. They used these
to make sure that they were able to visit as many booths as
possible and to gather information. PTSA not only contributed
financially to the event, but also provided some
amazing parent volunteers that helped with set up, monitoring the
event, and take down. Thank you PTSA!!!
The Health & Bioscience Academy
Research shows that students learn better when it's made clear to
them what they should be learning. Through PTSA's generous
donation, the health classrooms now have amazing standards posters.
Our AVHS library printed the 18" by 24" posters for each
classroom. Students will easily be able to glance at the
posters and see what standard they are working toward each day.
Your generosity is appreciated!
The Health 9 students use a program called "the Nine Month
Miracle" to show conception, pregnancy, and childbirth.
The computer program requires that students work with a
partner and use headsets in the computer lab. Through PTSA's
generous donation, we now have 10 new headsets for the students to
use. Thank you!
Diane Farthing and Tony Battilega

Work
Permits Available
Work permits will be
issued through the Adult Education Office, 215 Abbie St., Monday
through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For students
requesting theatrical permits, including entertainment industry,
modeling, etc., these must be obtained by a parent/guardian
directly from the California State Labor Commissioner at 1515 Clay Street, Room 801, Oakland, CA, 94612. The
procedure preferred is to send a note requesting an application for
this entertainment industry-specific type of work permit and a self-addressed,
stamped envelope to the above address. There is a portion of the
application, which must be completed by the school attended by the
minor, or whichever summer office is issuing work permits. The completed
application may then be mailed back to the Oakland office by the
parent again with a self-addressed, stamped envelope, and the
special work permit will be mailed back. The telephone number for
more information is (510) 557-7878,
and then select "0" for a representative. Items needed
for regular work permit applications include proof of age (picture
ID or birth certificate) and
proof of school enrollment.
All work permits
issued for vacation jobs will expire on or about September 1, one week after the
opening of the school year.
